The Neighborhood Initiative of the American University of Beirut (AUB) mobilizes the full power of AUB for the public good in Ras Beirut, promoting the neighborhood’s livability, vitality and diversity through innovative outreach activities and multidisciplinary research. The Neighborhood Initiative serves as a model of place‐based engagement for universities in Lebanon and the region, benefiting the university itself and the districts of Beirut surrounding it. Launched formally in 2007, the Initiative is housed in the President’s Office and has a staff of two: the Director and a Coordinator who serves as projects and office manager.
The Neighborhood Initiative Director sets the overall strategy of the Neighborhood Initiative in consultation with the AUB President and Neighborhood Initiative Advisory Group; develops new project ideas based on an understanding of the neighborhood and AUB’s academic resources and interests; catalyzes neighborhood‐focused projects; follows up and manages projects with faculty, the AUB administration, neighborhood stakeholders and public sector decision‐makers; raises funds from foundations, and individual and institutional donors; and oversees all administrative matters related to Neighborhood Initiative functioning at AUB.
The new director must have academic credentials (PhD or disciplinary equivalent), and substantial relevant work and research experience. The disciplinary field is open. Preferred qualifications and personal qualities include: knowledge of AUB, Ras Beirut and the Lebanese context; demonstrated experience working with other disciplines; the ability to work well with diverse constituents inside and outside campus; an effective team builder; willingness to support others and put the achievements of others first; strong writing skills in English; demonstrated ability to manage resources and raise funds. Experience directing a similar community engagement program is a plus. Proficiency in Arabic is also a plus.
